It may seem odd but one of the things to consider when starting or running your business is also one of the most critical factors to your success. Your Why dictates how hard you're prepared to work to complete the necessary tasks. Your why helps to get you out of bed in the morning and start your work day.
The more passionate you are about your why the more likely you are to succeed because you won't give up at the first hurdle, you'll persevere and keep going when times are tough. It's easy to stick to your work when things are going well but your why (if it's strong enough) will keep you going until you reach your end goal.
Is Your Why to Make Money?
Most people when you ask them say that the reason they do what they do is to make money. Is that really the answer? Let’s look at this for a moment. You want to make money? – a lot of money? And then what? Are you going to put it on display? In a drawer? Where? Money can also be numbers in your bank account? Are you going to just leave it to sit there and accumulate? Money is no good by itself. Would you agree it’s what money can do for you that’s important if you think your why is making money?
Let’s look deeper for a moment. Sit back and relax and imagine for a moment that you could live the life you wanted. You have all the money you need, to live the life you want. What would your life be like? What house would you live in? What type of car would you drive? Where would you go? What would you do? What lifestyle would you choose for you and your family? Take time to imagine what your life would be
like…Go into as much detail as you can. What does the inside of the house look like? What would you do on holiday? How would you fill your days at home? What would your life be like?
It’s not the money that is your why it’s the ‘why’ behind the money. Money itself is never enough. The money will never, ever be enough. Money is never enough It’s the why behind the money. What did you imagine in your chosen lifestyle? Was it more time with your family? More time with friends? The opportunities to travel the world, sample fine cuisine, visit the opera, go to concerts, time to read, and pursue a favourite pastime or hobby? Do you want to be able to donate time and/or money to good causes, provide a home for orphaned children or stray animals? What do you really want to do with your life? Why not take a moment to write it down:
When I started working at home the first time, about 25 years ago, it was because I had my first child. I couldn’t bear the fact of leaving him to anyone else to raise. I had spent many years trying to have a child so when I was blessed with my son there was no way I could face returning to my ‘job’, however much I had enjoyed it. I did not start my business because I had a big passion for what I was doing, because I was chasing a big idea or needed to make big money. I simply started working from home so I could be with my son and be his mum. In later years when my children were at school I decided to fulfil an ambition of mine and trained to become a teacher and worked as a teacher for a number of years but I missed the freedom that working from home gives you: The opportunity to always be home when the children were sick or needed me. As they got older I realised they needed their mum even more as they tackled the preteen and teenage years 5 Years ago I
took the decision to work full time again from home, determined to make it work again.
Now my boys have all left home my ‘why' has evolved yet again. I wanted to spend time with my elderly parents and help others find their passion and purpose in life.
What is your Why?
When I say that money is never enough, I mean that you are never going to work really hard just to be rich. It’s going to be rich in what? Do you want to be rich in opportunities, rich in choices, rich in what? Think about your why and then ask yourself “so what’s so good about that?” You say, my why is because I want to work from home. Alright, so what’s so good about that? Because I want to be here with my children. Well, what’s so good about that? Every time you think you have the next answer, ask yourself “what’s so good about that?”
Why am I doing what I’m doing?
Why do I want to work from home?
Why do I want to start a business?
Why do I want to grow my business?
Why do I want to get more customers?
Why do I want to get more team members?
Why do I want to quit my job and work from home?
I want to…
“What’s so good about that?”
Do you Feel Motivated?
When you know why you are doing what you are doing and are so passionate about what you are doing that any challenges in the way seem small in comparison you’ll then be motivated to take action. The more passionate you are about your why the more likely you are to succeed because you won't give up at the first hurdle, you'll persevere and keep going when times are tough. It's easy to stick to your work when things are going well but your why (if it's strong enough) will keep you going until you reach your target.
